MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT
Early intervention for lymphedema can help limit the disease, which is most effectively treated earlier and in milder cases. Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) provided by a certified lymphedema therapist has proven to be the most effective treatment for lymphedema. This treatment includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression (bandages and garments), exercise, and skincare.
COMPRESSION GARMENTS FOR HEAD & NECK LYMPHEDEMA
Compression garments are the main component of treating and managing head and neck lymphedema. At The Compression Closet, we offer a couple of head and neck compression choices, depending on your needs. One of our favorites is the JoViPak Standard Chin Strap.
JOVIPAK Standard Chin Strap for HEAD & NECK COMPRESSION
JoViPak Standard Chin Strap is less bulky and more comfortable than some other head and neck compression garments on the market. The JoViPak Chin Strap Standard addresses edema of the neck, mandible, and the anterior/lateral aspects of the face (partially covers the ears). The open neck seam accommodates your choice of padding. Use the Jovi Universal Pad with the standard chin strap. The Universal Pad foam chips help break up lymphatic fluid and move it out. Velcro straps at the neck and top of the head are adjustable. These adjustments help to accommodate fluctuations in size due to swelling.
It’s best to take measurements when edema is most reduced. This might be early in the morning or at the end of therapy. Adjust the Velcro closures at the neck and top of the head to the patient’s comfort level. You may also adjust your garment at night.
Renowned lymphedema therapist, educator, and cancer survivor JoAnn Rovig created JoViPak to manage edema and lymphedema. Being a cancer survivor, JoAnn is aware of sensitivity issues patients may have with certain fabrics and materials. She has designed her garments with this in mind, using organic cotton and lycra.
Chin Strap: 92% Organic Cotton, 8% Spandex
Neck Pad: 100% Polartec Power Dry (polyester)
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
You can wash the JoVi Chin Strap in a washing machine with cold water and on a delicate cycle. Dry in the dryer on low heat. Furthermore, do not use bleach or fabric softener, and do not iron.
You need not wash the neck pad as often as it does not have direct contact with the skin. Dry the neck pad in the dryer on low heat. Do not wring or twist the garment.
