Cool, Comfortable Compression
If you have lymphedema, edema, venous insufficiency, or swelling, you may already know that compression is an important part of managing fluid buildup. But what happens when traditional compression stockings are too uncomfortable to wear?
Maybe your compression stockings feel too tight. Perhaps they are difficult to put on and take off, make your legs feel hot, or leave you feeling like your skin cannot breathe. If you have sensitive skin, standard compression may be particularly challenging.
EdemaWear® compression garments offer a different approach.
EdemaWear uses a unique knitted construction called Fuzzy Wale Compression™, which provides mild compression while leaving much of the skin surface uncovered by the compression yarn. The result is a lightweight, breathable compression garment that may be easier for some people to tolerate than traditional compression stockings.
What Is Fuzzy Wale Compression?
The term Fuzzy Wale refers to the raised, fuzzy sections of the knitted fabric used in EdemaWear. These wales are connected by Lycra® spandex elastic yarn to create a specialized compression stockinette.
Unlike traditional compression garments, which provide relatively continuous compression across the skin, the Fuzzy Wale design creates areas of compression separated by areas of less compression.
This unique construction is designed to:
- Provide mild compression
- Allow greater airflow around the skin
- Help reduce the feeling of heat and confinement
- Make the garment easier to tolerate
- Allow moisture to evaporate more readily
- Provide a comfortable option for people who struggle with traditional compression
EdemaWear typically provides approximately 15–20 mmHg of compression, making it a relatively mild compression option.
How Does EdemaWear Help With Swelling?
Compression therapy works by applying pressure to tissue and supporting the movement of excess fluid. With EdemaWear, the specialized Fuzzy Wale construction creates localized areas of compression rather than continuously compressing the entire skin surface.
The spaces between the compression wales may also allow heat and moisture to dissipate, which can be especially appealing during hot weather.
EdemaWear was developed around the concept of directing excess fluid toward the body’s deeper venous and lymphatic circulation. This makes it an interesting option for people managing lymphedema, edema, and venous swelling.

Is EdemaWear an Alternative to Compression Stockings?
EdemaWear isn’t intended to replace every type of compression garment or every level of compression. However, it can be an excellent option for people who have difficulty tolerating conventional compression stockings.
You might want to consider EdemaWear if:
- Traditional compression stockings feel too tight or restrictive
- Your compression garment makes you feel hot
- You have sensitive skin
- You have difficulty donning and doffing traditional compression
- You need a mild compression option
- You are looking for something more comfortable for summer
- You need compression for an irregularly shaped area
- You want a versatile garment that can be cut and customized
Have you ever put on a compression stocking and immediately wanted to take it off?
You’re not alone.
Compression only works when you can actually wear it. Comfort and ease of use can make a significant difference in whether someone can consistently use their compression garment.

EdemaWear for Lymphedema and Edema
EdemaWear can be used as part of a compression strategy for a variety of swelling conditions, including lymphedema and edema.
Its mild compression makes it particularly interesting for people who cannot tolerate higher levels of compression or who need a comfortable garment for specific areas of the body.
EdemaWear has also been used in wound-care and lymphedema settings. Research and clinical experience have explored Fuzzy Wale Compression as an alternative to traditional tubular compression products.
Why Choose EdemaWear?
EdemaWear has several practical advantages that make it different from conventional compression stockings.
Easy to Put On and Take Off
One of the biggest complaints about traditional compression stockings is how difficult they can be to don and doff.
EdemaWear is a soft, flexible stockinette that can be easier to handle, particularly for people who have limited hand strength or mobility.
Comfortable in Hot Weather
Summer can be particularly difficult for people who wear compression.
Traditional compression garments can feel hot and restrictive. The open construction of the Fuzzy Wale fabric allows more of the skin surface to remain exposed to the surrounding air, which may improve comfort and allow perspiration to evaporate.
Mild Compression
EdemaWear provides approximately 15–20 mmHg of compression.
This makes it a potential option for people who need compression but find stronger compression uncomfortable or difficult to tolerate.
Latex Free
EdemaWear is made without latex, making it an option for individuals who need a latex-free compression garment.
Versatile
EdemaWear isn’t limited to the lower leg.
It can be used in different areas where swelling occurs and can be incorporated into other compression systems.
Creative Ways to Use EdemaWear
One of the things I like most about EdemaWear is its versatility.
It can be cut to the length you need without unraveling.
That means you aren’t limited to using the garment exactly as it comes out of the package.
You can also fold the fabric over itself to create a double layer. This can provide additional support and help keep the garment from sliding down.
EdemaWear as an Arm Sleeve or Gauntlet
An EdemaWear arm piece can be customized by cutting an opening for the thumb. This allows the garment to function as both an arm sleeve and gauntlet.
EdemaWear Under Compression Wraps
EdemaWear can also be used as a liner underneath certain compression wrapping systems.
Some lymphedema therapists use it underneath products such as the Circaid Reduction Kit.
Combining EdemaWear With Other Compression Garments
EdemaWear can also be incorporated into a larger compression system.
For example, therapists may combine it with a Juzo Compression Wrap for additional compression management of the lower leg or thigh.
Because EdemaWear can be cut and customized, it can be particularly useful when conventional compression garments don’t fit the individual’s shape or needs.
EdemaWear for Sensitive Skin
Skin sensitivity is a common reason people struggle with compression.
If a traditional stocking feels hot, restrictive, itchy, or irritating, you may find EdemaWear’s lighter construction more comfortable.
The open spaces created by the Fuzzy Wale construction allow air to circulate more of the skin surface. This can be especially beneficial for people who find conventional compression uncomfortable during warmer months.
Of course, everyone’s skin and swelling are different. If you have fragile skin, an open wound, significant swelling, or another medical condition, talk with your healthcare professional before selecting a compression garment.
How to Size EdemaWear
Sizing EdemaWear is relatively straightforward.
Measure the largest circumference of the area you want to compress and compare that measurement with the EdemaWear sizing chart.
For many people:
- Small and Medium are commonly used for lower-leg applications.
- Large and X-Large may be useful for larger areas such as the thigh or, in some situations, areas of trunk or chest-wall swelling.
Keep in mind that Small is sold as a pair, while the other sizes are generally sold individually.

How to Care for EdemaWear
Proper care can help extend the life of your garment.
- Hand wash in cold water.
- Hang to dry.
- Remove the garment daily for bathing and skin care.
- Reposition the garment as needed.
- Blood stains can be treated with hydrogen peroxide.
With daily use, the approximate lifespan of an EdemaWear garment is 4–6 months, although actual wear life can vary depending on use, washing, and individual circumstances.

Is EdemaWear Compression Right for
You?
EdemaWear isn’t the right compression solution for everyone. The amount and type of compression you need depends on your condition, the location and severity of your swelling, your skin, and your ability to tolerate compression.
But if you’ve been searching for:
- a comfortable alternative to traditional compression stockings
- mild compression for lymphedema
- compression for sensitive skin
- a breathable compression garment for summer
- easy-to-don compression for edema
then EdemaWear may be worth discussing with your lymphedema therapist, wound-care specialist, vascular specialist, or other healthcare professional.
