CARESIA: ANOTHER COMPRESSION FAVORITE
Today, I would like to highlight another of The Compression Closet’s favorite compression garments for managing lymphedema. L&R-Solaris Caresia is an off-the-shelf bandage liner that simplifies and enhances standard bandaging techniques. In addition, the Caresia eliminates all the underlayers of traditional bandaging, reducing stress while saving time on bandaging and making lymphedema treatment easier. This garment has long been a favorite of therapists and their patients at The Compression Closet.
Solaris Caresia Bandage Liners simplify complex multi-layered bandaging protocols. The Caresia provides an alternative to foam liners, stockinettes, and gauze. Caresia garments are designed for the active phase of therapy and manufactured with the same technology as Solaris’ custom Tribute and Tribute Wrap garments. Therefore maximizing therapeutic results.
BENEFITS OF THE CARESIA
Patients don the Caresia and then wrap the recommended bandage layers on top of the bandage liner. The foam chips create pressure differentials and promote a micro-massage-type effect to break up and soften hardened skin or fibrotic tissue to support skin health. In addition, the high-stretch fabric offers a greater range of motion than multi-layer bandages and conforms well to body contours. L&R – Solaris makes Caresia for the hand, arm, foot, and leg. The leg component comes in two pieces for those needing lower leg compression rather than the entire leg.
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF MULTI-LAYER BANDAGING
Multi-layer lymphedema bandaging provides compression, a crucial element during therapy’s active/intensive phase. Compression is one of the most effective treatment options when paired with Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). Dr. Heim of the Dr. Vodder Akademie Walchsee and Wittlinger Lymphedema Clinic conducted a comparative study and product evaluation with 29 patients previously treated at the renowned Wittlinger Lymphedema Clinic. The goal was to determine Quality of Life improvements resulting from a single change in treatment protocols: using Caresia bandage liner instead of standard multi-layer bandaging. These factors included fit, bandaging time, mobility, effect on fibrosis, skin tolerance, and acceptance.
- 38% of participants reported feeling the fit was better using the Caresia
- 41% of participants reduced bandaging time with Caresia
- 34% of participants further reduced fibrosis with Caresia
- 46% of participants had greater skin tolerance using Caresia
- 43% of participants tolerated 24/7 bandaging protocols better with Caresia
COMPARATIVE STUDY CONCLUSIONS
A significant number of participants experienced improvements in five of the six Quality of Life factors during the Caresia protocol. Therefore, as patient Quality of Life is an important consideration, Caresia may be a preferred treatment option during the active phase of therapy. “I and most therapists and patients believe that Caresia is an enrichment in treating lymphedema, especially if patients have fibrotic changes.” Dr. Christine Heim.
ALTERNATIVE USES OF THE CARESIA
Although the makers of Caresia designed the product as a bandage liner, therapists soon realized it provided an alternative nighttime compression garment. Compression Nighttime garments can be costly, especially when custom-made. However, the Caresia garment proved to be an easy solution for those unable to purchase a nighttime compression garment.
Wearing compression garments at night has proven beneficial in maintaining gains during lymphedema therapy. Because your body doesn’t have to fight gravity while lying down, it’s easier for your compression garments to be effective. Wearing nighttime compression garments is like getting a gentle lymphatic massage all night.
WHY CHOOSE CARESIA?
First, you will simplify your compression for lymphedema treatment by reducing bandaging time. In addition, the high-stretch fabric offers a greater range of motion than typical bandaging. Furthermore, it will jump-start the initial lymphatic system with unique foam-chip particles that encourage gentle tissue stretch and pressure differential. This pressure helps to move the lymphatic fluid out of the affected area. The foam chips will also help to break up severe fibrosis while remaining gentle on delicate skin. Finally, the Caresia will help disperse irregular pressures to prevent compression hot spots.
AN EXCELLENT TOOL TO MANAGE LYMPHEDEMA
We all are looking for ways to make lymphedema treatment easier, aren’t we? Furthermore, it’s always good to have tools in your toolbox to help combat flair-ups in your lymphedema when they occur. Sometimes, it’s challenging to get in to see your lymphedema therapist immediately. If so, you will have an easy way to manage your lymphedema until you can get an appointment.
